How to play Neon Snake

Guide the glowing snake, gobble orbs, and grow as long as you can without crashing.

Neon Snake is the arcade classic. Steer a snake around a grid, eat the orbs, and grow — without hitting a wall or your own tail.

The rules

The snake moves continuously and never stops. You choose its direction with the arrow keys, WASD or a swipe; you cannot halt it, and you cannot reverse directly into yourself.

Eating an orb adds a segment to your tail and scores. As your score climbs the snake moves faster.

Hitting a wall or any part of your own tail ends the run.

Why it gets harder even though nothing changes

Nothing about the rules changes as you play. What changes is that the obstacle is you.

Early on the grid is nearly empty and almost any route to the orb works. By the time you are long, most of the grid is tail, and the orb frequently appears somewhere that can only be reached through a corridor of your own making. The game is not really about reflexes at all — it is about not building a shape you cannot get out of.

The habit that separates a long run from a short one

Move along the walls, not through the middle.

A snake coiled around the outside of the grid leaves a large open space in the centre. A snake that cuts across the middle divides the free space into two pockets, and the moment one of those pockets is smaller than your length, entering it is fatal.

The rule of thumb is to keep your tail as one connected mass along an edge and to keep the empty space as one connected region. Every time you cut the board in half, you halve your options.

Getting to an awkward orb

When an orb appears somewhere difficult, the answer is usually not the shortest path.

Take a longer route that keeps your body against a wall and approaches the orb from the side that leaves you an exit. Arriving at an orb with no way out afterwards is the most common way a good run ends — you eat, you grow one segment, and that segment is the one that seals you in.

Speed

The speed increase is what eventually finishes every run, because it shortens the time you have to plan while your body gets longer and the planning gets harder.

The practical response is to make your decisions earlier. At high speed you cannot decide at the junction; you have to have decided two junctions ago.

Controls

Arrow keys or WASD to steer. On mobile, swipe in any direction. Eat the orbs, avoid the walls and your own tail.

Strategy tips

  • Hug the walls and keep the middle open. A tail coiled around the edge leaves one big free space; a tail through the centre splits it in two.
  • Never cut the free space in half. The moment a pocket is smaller than your body, going into it is fatal.
  • Plan your exit before you eat, not after. Growing one segment on arrival is what seals most runs in.
  • Take the longer route to an awkward orb. The shortest path is often the one that traps you afterwards.
  • Decide two junctions ahead. As the speed rises there is no time to choose at the corner itself.
  • Follow your own tail when you are long. Trailing your body at a constant distance is a safe holding pattern that buys thinking time.
  • Keep turns square and tight. Wandering diagonals across open ground waste space you will want later.
  • Accept that speed ends every run. The score is how long you delay it, so play for structure rather than for the next orb.
