About this game

Daily Sums is Kakuro, the puzzle that reads like a crossword and solves like arithmetic. Every run of white squares carries a total in the black square beside it: fill the run with digits one to nine, all different, adding to exactly that number. Each square sits in two runs at once, one across and one down, and it is the collision between them that gives the answer away. A run of two adding to seventeen can only be eight and nine. A run of three adding to six can only be one, two and three. Cross those two facts over the same square and the digit is settled before you have added anything up. Every board here is generated in the browser and proved before you see it. The proof is not that an answer exists but that a player can reach it: a solver that only propagates, never guesses, has to finish the grid before the board is dealt. Boards are graded by which deduction they actually need — Gentle falls to crossings alone, Hard is only called Hard once switching the harder rule off leaves the grid standing. Three sizes, a level ladder that climbs both size and grade, and one shared board a day for everyone.

Controls

Tap a white square to select it, then tap a digit on the pad. On a keyboard, type 1-9 to write a digit and Backspace to clear one.

  • Arrow keys move between white squares
  • N toggles pencil marks, as does the Notes button
  • The Size button cycles 8x8, 10x10 and 12x12
  • Daily switches to today's shared board and back

How to play

Fill every white square with a digit from 1 to 9 so that each run adds up to its clue.

The two rules

  • A run is a straight line of white squares. Its total is the number in the black square immediately to its left, for a run going across, or immediately above it, for a run going down
  • No digit may repeat inside a single run. Runs are always two squares or longer, so every clue is worth reading

Where the answers come from

  • Each white square belongs to two runs at once. The digits its across-run allows, crossed with the digits its down-run allows, are usually far fewer than nine
  • Short runs with extreme totals give the most away. Two squares adding to 3 must be 1 and 2; two adding to 17 must be 8 and 9; three adding to 24 must be 7, 8 and 9
  • A run that is full but wrong turns red, so a slip is caught where it happened rather than twenty squares later
