About this game
Slide Maze is the ice-puzzle rule everybody knows from somewhere: swipe a direction and the block does not step one square, it slides until a wall or the edge stops it. You cannot stop halfway, which is the whole game — every wall on the board is really a brake, and the route you want is a sequence of things to crash into. Three gems have to be collected before the exit will open, and gems are picked up by sliding over them rather than by landing on them, so the puzzle is as much about the order you visit them in as about reaching them at all. That ordering is what gives the game its depth: measured against a solver, adding the gems takes the average shortest route from about five moves to twelve, and a player who simply heads for the nearest thing matches the best possible route around one time in ten. The number marked Fewest is not an estimate. Because a position is only the block's square plus which gems it has, the entire set of positions fits in memory and the game searches all of them, so the figure on screen is the true minimum and matching it is a perfect run. Boards are chosen to hit a target difficulty rather than to be as hard as they happen to come out, so the ladder climbs steadily instead of lurching. One thing worth knowing: a careless slide really can leave the block somewhere the exit is unreachable, and rather than let you discover that twenty moves later, the game checks after every single move and tells you the moment it happens. Undo is unlimited and free. Grids run from six squares across to eight, and a fresh maze arrives every day for everyone, with a streak and a spoiler-free share.
Controls
Swipe across the board in any of the four directions to send the block that way. On a keyboard the arrow keys do the same, and Z undoes.
- Undo steps back one move and is unlimited.
- New deals a fresh maze; Daily switches to today's shared one.
How to play
Swipe and the block slides until a wall or the edge of the board stops it. You cannot stop it halfway.
Finishing a maze
- Collect all three gems, then reach the ringed exit.
- Gems are picked up by sliding over them, not by stopping on them.
- The exit ring stays dim until the last gem is aboard, then it lights up.
Fewest, and getting stuck
- Every maze is searched before you see it, so the Fewest number is the true smallest number of moves — match it for a perfect run.
- A bad slide can leave the block unable to reach the exit. The game checks after every move and says so straight away rather than letting you find out later.
- Undo is free and unlimited, so nothing is ever lost.
