About this game
Tray Match is the triple-matching puzzle where the pressure comes from the tray rather than the clock. Tiles are piled in overlapping layers and you can only take one that nothing is sitting on top of. Every tile you take goes into a tray with seven slots, and any three of a kind clear together the moment the third one lands. That is the whole rule, and the catch is that the tray never empties by itself: take seven tiles that do not make a set and the board is finished. It is the first game in this catalogue with a genuine lose state that is your own doing rather than the timer's, and that only works if losing was actually avoidable — so the boards are built to guarantee it. Rather than dealing tiles at random and hoping, the generator assigns the symbols by playing the board out in advance: it repeatedly takes three tiles that are free at that moment and stamps them as a matching set. Replaying that same order clears the whole pile while never holding more than three tiles at once, which means the seven slots you get are more than twice what a perfect player needs. That headroom is the room you have to be wrong in. The difficulty ladder was chosen by measurement rather than by feel: each candidate board was played by a careless player and an attentive one, and the rungs that made the final game are the ones where paying attention actually paid — the two hardest boards tried were dropped because they beat everybody equally, which is punishment rather than difficulty. Symbols are distinguished by shape as well as colour, so the pile still reads if hues are hard to separate. Stacks run from thirty tiles to sixty-nine across five layers, and a fresh tray arrives every day for everyone.
Controls
Tap or click any tile that nothing is covering. It goes straight to the tray.
- Covered tiles are dimmed and cannot be taken; tapping one shakes it rather than doing nothing.
- New deals a fresh stack; Daily switches to today's shared tray.
How to play
Take a tile that nothing is sitting on top of, and it goes into your tray. Three of a kind in the tray clear together.
The stack
- Tiles sit in overlapping layers. A tile is only takeable when nothing on a higher layer covers it.
- Takeable tiles are drawn bright; covered ones are dimmed.
- Clearing a set uncovers whatever was underneath, which is how the pile opens up.
The tray
- Seven slots. Any three matching tiles clear the moment the third lands, wherever they sit.
- Fill all seven with no set among them and the board is over.
- Every stack can be cleared — the tray is more than twice the size a perfect run needs, so the space is there to be spent on mistakes.
