About this game

Reversi — the classic game also known as Othello — is a battle for territory that turns on a single idea: trap a line of your opponent's discs between two of yours and the whole line flips to your colour. Every move you place has to outflank at least one enemy disc, and each flip can swing the count wildly, so a board that looks lost can flip back in a couple of moves. The trick the computer knows and beginners learn the hard way is that the disc count in the middle of the game barely matters — mobility and the corners do. Corners can never be flipped, so they anchor everything around them, while grabbing squares next to an empty corner usually hands one over. The computer plays with real positional judgement across three strengths, from a gentle Easy to a Hard that guards its corners and squeezes your options. Legal squares are marked so you always know where you can play, discs flip with a satisfying turn, and passing is handled automatically when you have no move. When the board fills, the most discs wins. Plays the same with a tap or a click — no download, no sign-up.

Controls

Tap or click any highlighted square to place a disc.

  • You can only play where you outflank at least one of the computer's discs.
  • Set the computer's strength with Easy / Medium / Hard.

How to play

You play the light discs, the computer the dark. On your turn, place a disc so that it traps one or more straight lines of the computer's discs between your new disc and another of yours — every trapped disc flips to your colour.

  • You must make a flanking move if one exists; if you have no legal move your turn is passed automatically.
  • Corners can never be flipped, so they are the most valuable squares — and the squares beside an empty corner are the most dangerous to give away.
  • The game ends when neither side can move, and whoever has more discs wins.
